Four areas of the Salmon-Challis Forest may undergo controlled burning this spring, depending on weather.
Forest Service officials said between 1,000 and 3,000 acres in the Wino Basin, 16 miles southeast of Challis, may be burned.
About 20 acres of piled materials at Bonanza Landing, 27 miles west of Challis, is on the burn list.
Another possible burn site is in the Cedar, Ramshorn and Cabin creek areas on the east side of the South Lost Mountains, 13 miles east of Mackay. Between 1,000 and 8,000 acres may be burned there.
About 1,500 acres could be burned at Big Creek, 33 miles northeast of Mackay.
Forest officials point out that short periods of high smoke are likely during the controlled burns. Signs are posted in areas where burns are going to occur and residents in the area are notified in advance. Some fires will be ignited by hand and others by helicopter, according to the Forest Service.
