The process to appoint an interim sheriff for Custer County should begin next week, as long as Sheriff Stu Lumpkin does resign on April 30 as he told county commissioners last Nov. 30 he would.
Once the Custer County Republican Central Committee receives confirmation that the seat is vacant, committee members will set a meeting at which they’ll interview people who want to be considered for the appointment, central committee Chairman Darr Moon said. Moon expects to receive official word from the county on May 1 and within seven days he’ll post notice to central committee members of the meeting for those interviews.
After people who are interested in being appointed to the sheriff’s post are interviewed, central committee members identify their top three choices and submit those names to the Custer County Commission. They have 15 days from the day they are officially notified that the office is vacant to submit names to commissioners. County commissioners then have 15 days to appoint an interim sheriff, in the process outlined by state law.
The chief deputy, Crissi Gilchrist, will serve as acting sheriff from the day Lumpkin leaves office until commissioners appoint an interim sheriff. The interim post expires in January, and whoever is elected in the November general election will take office in January.
Moon said he’s already been contacted by five people who are interested in being appointed to the interim sheriff’s post, including the two primary election candidates for the office.
“We’ve had more interest expressed than just the candidates,” Moon said. “I didn’t expect that.”
