Three of the four Custer County offices that are up for election this year drew multiple candidates, meaning a contested Republican primary race in May and at least one contested race in the November general election.
The two open spots on the Custer County Commission each drew multiple candidates, and the sheriff’s race drew two Republican candidates. There will be no race in the prosecuting attorney contest, unless someone files as a write-in candidate. The deadline to file as a write-in candidate is March 22. Candidates can withdraw from the primary election through March 29, so the ballots aren’t necessarily set yet.
No Democrats filed for a county office, although four Democrats did file for the committeemen posts, along with nine Republicans seeking committeemen positions throughout the county.
One race is guaranteed to have a November contested ballot. Challis resident Melvin Lanier filed independent of any political party for the two-year District 1 commission seat. Because primary elections are when political parties choose their nominees for general elections, people running independent of any party are not on a primary election ballot in Idaho. Lanier was required to file by the March 15 deadline, but his name won’t appear on the ballot until November.
Republicans who filed for the District 1 commission seat are Ron Bloxham, Will Naillon and Jake Zollinger, all of Challis.
Two Mackay men filed for the four-year District 3 county commissioner job — Gordon Vaden and Steve Smith.
Joel Peterson and Levi Maydole, both of Challis, filed for the four-year sheriff’s position.
Justin Oleson filed for the four-year prosecuting attorney’s job.
Custer County voters will see some choices for state offices on their May 21 primary election ballots. The Idaho House of Representatives District 8B spot drew four candidates. Tony Ullrich of Hammett filed as a member of the Constitution Party. Democrat Jared Dawson of Boise filed and two Republicans also filed for that two-year post — Faye Thompson of McCall and Megan Blanksma of Hammett.
Two Republicans are seeking the District 8A seat in the Idaho House. Matt Bundy of Mountain Home and Rob Beiswenger of Horseshoe Bend both filed.
Three people are running for the District 8 position in the Idaho Senate — Democrat David Hoag of Mountain Home and Republicans Geoff Schroeder of Mountain Home and Christy Zito of Hammett.
Custer County is in Idaho’s second congressional district. Seven candidates filed for the U.S. House of Representatives position, currently held by Republican Mike Simpson, who filed for re-election. Two other Republicans also filed: Scott Cleveland of Eagle and Sean Higgins of Boise.
Two Constitution Party candidates filed for the U.S. House: Idaho Law Carta Sierra of Pocatello and Pro-Life, formerly known as Marvin Richardson, of Emmett.
David Roth of Idaho Falls is running on the Democratic ticket and Todd Corsetti of Pocatello filed as a Libertarian for the U.S. House post.
Idaho’s primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
