Additional legislation to make it easier for Idahoans to get photo identification cards to use for voting has passed the state Legislature.
The 2024 bill allows people who have had a current driver’s license in the last six months to also get a free ID. The legislation takes effect July 1.
Last year Idaho legislators passed a bill to allow people to get photo IDs for no charge, but the six-month driver’s license restriction was in place. So far, 60 Idahoans have been issued the free photo ID card, according to Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane.
People must provide proof of residency, age and identity in order to receive a free ID card. The new cards are acceptable forms of identification to register to vote and to verify identity at a polling place. Idaho voters must show identification at polling places. Acceptable forms of ID are driver’s licenses, an Idaho ID card, passports, federal ID cards, tribal ID cards and current concealed weapons permits.
To obtain a free ID card, visit a DMV office or go online to www.itd.idaho.gov.
